Education / Outreach
Michael Heitmann as “The Toy Maker” and Madelein Bowman as “Pauline” in The Toy Shop
The Opera-tunities program is designed to instill an early appreciation of opera among children ages kindergarten through 6th grade with a 60 minute performance in the school. Since 2011, Opera-tunities has produced eight operas, and held over 160 performances for nearly 50,000 students. We are continuing to expand our reach into Washington as well as Idaho schools.
Board Vice President and costume designer, Denise Leonard assists with the wardrobe station.
General Director Dawn Wolski instructs patrons on the key to projecting a powerful sound.
INO participates in the annual TheaterFest presented by Spokane Arts. This outreach event reaches more than 1000 people in the community and this year included both The Fox and The Bing theaters. Our role is to help make theatre more accessible by providing free performances and engaging activities for all ages. We offered a 30 minute opera lesson, a wardrobe station and mainstage performances including Lensky’s Aria from Eugene Onegin by tenor Brandon Michael and Madame Butterfly’s “Un Bel Di” by soprano Amy Porter.

Free to the public
This charming fable is about a Toymaker, two of his doll creations Paul and Pauline, and a magician who wants to steal them. The mechanical dolls wish they were real (“If only I could cry, how happy I would be.”) and discover that “love is the key” that brings them to life.
