This charming fable is about a toymaker, two of his doll creations Paul and Pauline, and a magician who wants to steal them. The mechanical dolls wish they were real (“if only I would cry, how happy I would be!”) and discover that “love is the key” that brings them to life.

A young Japanese maiden, whose pride and honor are wounded by an American naval officer, is left to heartbreak and tragedy. Puccini’s music is breath-taking as it builds between hope and anticipation, betrayal and despair. Musical highlights include the radiant “Flower Duet,” and “Un bel di vedremo” (“One fine day we shall see”). Passion and pathos unleash in this deeply moving drama, an enduring favorite.
